![]() This isn’t to say that there aren’t time-saving technologies and ways to speed things up later in the game as you progress, but getting to these things and setting them up will take so long that it’s likely to put many off before they get there. The issue stems from the game layering too many time and resource-consuming elements on top of each other, each costing large amounts of energy and again with too little a sense of progress given as reward. What’s unfortunate about the game is the approach taken to balancing this aspect of play, as getting things done takes far too long and progress takes an age as a result. ![]() Given Graveyard Keeper’s inspirations, it should be no surprise to read that your character has an overall energy gauge to manage each day, that sleep and food restore energy and that it’s spent on performing tasks throughout the day. Tasks given often take quite some time too, given the often extensive crafting requirements of some items and the technology research required to begin production at all, but more on that in a moment. The inquisitor seems to take great pleasure in meting out his justice, just as a traveling merchant takes pride in giving you a loan and using you to make a profit with zero work. The people of Graveyard Keeper are often rather grim or dour in their tone and dialogue, with an undercurrent of almost mocking snideness to their instructions. Dumped into a strange medieval town, you’re tasked with looking after the local graveyard. There’s a light story that details how you got this position that I won’t spoil but I will say that it had far more complexity to its plot than I was expecting. There are certainly elements of greatness in it’s design but it’s often spoiled some poor balancing and obtuse direction.As the title would suggest, you’ll be taking on the role of a local graveyard keeper. Graveyard Keeper straddles that line and honestly, I still don’t know whether I enjoyed it or just…persisted through it. Done poorly it can be an intense exercise in frustration which eventually collapses into itself as structure is replaced with chaos. Done well, it can be a somewhat cathartic experience as players feel the satisfaction of scheduling tasks and ticking things off a to-do, the essence of escapism. Ust as the slice-of-life novels wish to capture you in the boots of another the “life simulator role-playing game” (as I think a fair title for the genre) seeks to immerse you in the boots of a character by having you walk around and complete chores. ![]() It allows me to jump in for one or two in-game days while I’m out and about and kill some free time harvesting resources, planting crops, or digging a grave or two, effectively setting my up for success and making it that much easier to achieve some of the game’s numerous goals. Given that days in Graveyard Keeper last all of nine minutes, the Switch really feels like the ideal way to play. I always felt the combat in Graveyard Keeper was a little floaty, and something as simple as having the Joy-Cons rumble whenever my sword connects with a monster could have really improved things. No medieval game would be complete without those!
